Are Angels Really What You Think? Seraphim, Cherubim & Messengers
In Hebrew and in Greek, the word for “angel” simply means “one who is sent,” a messenger. Tonight Watchful looks at the heavenly beings around God’s throne and at the men the Bible calls by the same word.
The seraphims of Isaiah 6: six wings, “Holy, holy, holy,” a live coal on the prophet’s lips, and “Here am I; send me.” The cherubims: guarding the way to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24), in gold over the mercy seat (Exodus 25:18–22), the four living creatures by the river Chebar (Ezekiel 1 and 10), and the four beasts around the throne (Revelation 4:6–8).
The same word used for people: a priest (Malachi 2:7), a prophet (Haggai 1:13), John the Baptist (Malachi 3:1; Mark 1:2), and the disciples of John and of Jesus (Luke 7:24; 9:52). Plus “the angel of the church” in Revelation 2–3.
Then back to Revelation 14: are the angels flying “in the midst of heaven” heavenly beings, a message carried by people, or both? And do the 144,000 carry that message (Revelation 14:1–6; Matthew 24:14)?
Also, if time allows: the third heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2–4; Genesis 1; 1 Kings 8:27).
